My youngest has been demanding a steam train ride incessantly for the last week. Fortunately my wife was away this weekend, so I had an excuse to leave the home improvements alone and indulge his wishes. This weekend was Didcot Railway Centre’s Steam Extravaganza, and despite the drizzle it was fabulous. Many engines were in steam, including a visit from City of Truro, which has a new paintjob and number since I last saw her three years ago. I was also taken with how unusual (and handsome I think) GWR Mogul 5322 looks in its first world war Royal Ordnance Depot livery. This engine was shipped new to France in 1917 to deliver supplies to the advancing British troops. A true survivor that has now outlived everyone she fought alongside.
